About the app: GIMP is short for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a free, open-source image editor available for multiple platforms, including GNU/Linux, OS X and Windows. By far the latest version is GIMP 2.10.10 released on April 7, 2019.

To install GIMP on Mac is quite easy as you just need to open the downloaded DMG file and drag the to your Applications folder. To uninstall GIMP also requires you to delete it in the Applications folder. But to fully remove the traces it created on your Mac, you need to do more than that. Read on if you are interested.

Go through three stages to fully uninstall GIMP on Mac

Here we divide the whole manual uninstallation into three parts. Follow the steps below:

Stage 1. make sure GIMP is not in use

Prior to the uninstall, you should check if the application is active or not. You will not be able to delete an open app as the uninstall will be interrupted by an error message.

There are three ways to shut down the active GIMP on macOS / Mac OS X:

> If GIMP shows up in the Dock, right click on its icon and choose Quit

> When GIMP is active, click GIMP in the Menu Bar and choose Quit GIMP

If GIMP remains in Dock, right click on it and chose Options > Remove from Dock.

Stage 2. delete GIMP in Applications folder

To truly uninstall GIMP, you need to delete it in the Applications folder and Trash.

  • Open up Finder from the Dock, and access to the Applications folder from sidebar (if it does not appear there, click the Go menu on the top bar and choose Applications)
  • Right click on GIMP, and then choose Move to Trash option

Once throwing the app into Trash, you can choose to empty the Trash from the Finder menu. But for the sake of safety, we suggest you to only delete GIMP in the Trash:

  • Right click on GIMP icon in Trash, and choose Delete Immediately
  • Click Delete button in the pop-up window to permanently delete GIMP

Now GIMP has been permanently removed from your Mac. But is the removal over?

Stage 3. Remove GIMP traces in ~/Library

Like most third party apps, GIMP will create associated files and store them in different system folders. Deleting GIMP the app itslef will not help remove those files and folders in your system. Luckily you can use the Search feature in Finder to locate and delete items pertaining to GIMP. Here is how to remove GIMP leftovers:

  • In a Finder window, click Go from the Menu Bar, and choose Go to Folder
  • Type ~/Library in the box and hit Enter key (or click Go button) to open it up
  • Click the Search in upper right corner, and then type GIMP in the search bar
  • Click Library under the search bar to show the search result in this hidden folder
  • Select the files and folders whose names contain GIMP, and move them to the Trash

Make sure you don’t delete other irrelevant items in the ~/Library folder, and you’d better leave the files in Trash for a few days, to see if there is any problem after that.

If you have no idea which items belong to GIMP or how to execute the removal properly, we highly suggest you to adopt the following uninstall solution instead.
